Find the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 3, 7, 11, 15, …
\( a=3 \), \( d=4 \). \( u_{10}=3+9\cdot4=39 \).
Find the sum of the first 20 terms of the arithmetic series with first term 5 and common difference 3.
\( S_n=\dfrac{n}{2}(2a+(n-1)d)=\dfrac{20}{2}(10+19\cdot3)=10\cdot67=670 \).
Find the 5th term of the geometric sequence 2, 6, 18, 54, …
\( ar^{4}=2\cdot3^4=162 \).
The sum of the first \( n \) terms of an arithmetic series is \( S_n=n^2+3n \). Find the first term and the common difference.
\( u_1=S_1=4 \). \( u_2=S_2-S_1=10-4=6 \). \( d=2 \).
Find the sum to infinity of the geometric series \( 4 + 2 + 1 + \dfrac{1}{2} + \cdots \)
\( |r|=1/2<1 \). \( S_\infty=\dfrac{a}{1-r}=\dfrac{4}{1/2}=8 \).
The third term of a geometric sequence is 12 and the sixth term is 96. Find the first term and the common ratio.
\( ar^2=12 \), \( ar^5=96 \) ⇒ \( r^3=8 \) ⇒ \( r=2 \). \( a\cdot4=12 \) ⇒ \( a=3 \).
An arithmetic series has first term 7 and common difference 4. Find the least value of \( n \) such that \( S_n > 500 \).
\( S_n=\dfrac{n}{2}(14+(n-1)4)=\dfrac{n}{2}(4n+10)=2n^2+5n \). \( 2n^2+5n-500>0 \). Solve \( 2n^2+5n-500=0 \): \( n\approx\frac{-5+\sqrt{4025}}{4}\approx\frac{-5+63.4}{4}\approx14.6 \). So \( n=15 \).
The sum of the first \( n \) terms of a geometric series is \( S_n=\dfrac{3(2^n-1)}{2^{n-1}} \). Find the first term and the common ratio, and find \( S_\infty \) if it exists.
\( a=S_1=3 \). \( S_2=\dfrac{3(4-1)}{2}=4.5 \) ⇒ \( a+ar=4.5 \) ⇒ \( 3+3r=4.5 \) ⇒ \( r=1/2 \). \( S_\infty=\dfrac{3}{1-1/2}=6 \).
Prove that the sum of the first \( n \) terms of an arithmetic series with first term \( a \) and common difference \( d \) is \( S_n=\dfrac{n}{2}(2a+(n-1)d) \).
\( S=a+(a+d)+\cdots+(a+(n-1)d) \). Reverse: \( S=(a+(n-1)d)+\cdots+a \). Add: \( 2S=n(2a+(n-1)d) \) ⇒ formula.
A geometric series has first term 5 and common ratio \( r \). Given that the sum to infinity is 20 and the sum of the first three terms is 19.25, find the possible values of \( r \).
\( \dfrac{5}{1-r}=20 \) ⇒ \( 1-r=1/4 \) ⇒ \( r=3/4 \). Check sum of first 3: \( 5+5\cdot3/4+5\cdot9/16=5+3.75+2.8125=11.5625 eq19.25 \). Actually solve properly: from \( S_\infty \): \( r=3/4 \) only if \( a=5 \). The sum of first 3 condition may not hold — recalculate intended: if \( S_\infty=20 \), \( r=3/4 \). Perhaps the question intends only \( S_\infty \) or adjust. Alternative: use \( S_3=19.25 \) with \( a=5 \): \( 5(1-r^3)/(1-r)=19.25 \). Combined with \( 5/(1-r)=20 \) gives consistency check. With \( r=3/4 \), \( S_3=5(1-(27/64))/(1/4)=5\cdot(37/64)\cdot4=5\cdot37/16=11.5625 \). So the 19.25 may be a different value; leave as finding \( r \) from \( S_\infty \) alone: \( r=3/4 \).
